Inventory of new microbial taxa from Iran
Authors
Abstract:
Microorganisms constitute more than half of the Earth's biomass and in addition to quantity, they represent great diversity. In January 2013, the number of officially registered names forprokaryotic microorganisms at the genus and species levels were, respectively, approximately2100 and 12000. Current authorized methods for classification and identification of newmicrobial taxa are polyphasic approaches which make use of a codified set of characteristicsfor classification of microorganisms. Here, we present a brief overview of criteria by whichprokaryotes are classified and subsequently summarize some recent findings on the microbialflora of Iran. Among all microbial taxa identified to date, six taxa at the genus level and 24taxa at the species level were first discovered in and reported from Iran. This attests to theexistence of a rich microbial diversity in Iran. Among the species, four belong to the Archaeaand the others belong to the Bacteria domain. The bacterial taxa consist of six Gram- negativespecies within Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes phylems and 20 Gram-positive taxa thatare among the Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and related organisms. It is incumbent that furtherfocus be placed on the rich ecological diversity of Iran, and it is expected that this will resultin identification of new endemic microorganisms.

The genus Carex belongs to tribe Cariceae, subfamily Caricoideae and family Cyperaceae. This genus, with about 2000 species in the world and more than 50 species in Iran, is the largest genus among the family. In expedition to North West and West of Iran, two species, namely, Carex acuta and C. cilicica as new records and C. flava, C. rostrata and C. supina as reinvestigated species are reporte...
full textFour new Fusarium taxa isolated from gramineous plants in Iran
In the course of a survey during growing seasons of 2002-04, various fields and pastures in 23 Iranian provinces were sampled. Some 1200 isolates of Fusarium from root, crown, stem and spike of various plants belonging to the family Poaceae were recovered using Nash-Snyder selective medium and purified on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Based on morphological characters, 35 Fusarium species were id...

The type plant of Allium akaka S.G. Gmelin ex Roem. & Schult. was probably collected in the mountains west of Bandar Anzali. Here plants fitting the original description are extant, and one was selected as epitype. This taxon in the strict sense is not conspecific with A. latifolium Jaub. & Spach, and is morphologically well separable from topo-typical plants of A. haemanthoides Boiss. & Reut. ...
